The Golden Compass

Yesterday we went and saw the Golden Compass and I loved it. It seemed to follow the book pretty close but then I haven't read it in years so I am not sure. I do remember the horror of the daemons being torn from the kids as being more awful than they showed in the film and Mrs Coulter to be even more evil but maybe that was in the next two book. The graphics were really incredible. Nicole Kidman plays Mrs. Coulter to perfection, beautiful and evil at the same time.

The one thing that made me sit back and wonder is what are people thinking taking little kids to a movie like this. There was this family behind us with a toddler, and a baby and I saw others too. Not to get on my high horse but I never took my daughter to movies that weren't age specific. I can still remember movies from my childhood that gave me nightmares.

You can help finalize my daemon, do you think this is me?

I never read the book. My daughter has asked for the boxed set for Christmas. I don't think she ever read them either. I don't know if she will see the film in DC or wait and go to it with me when she is home for the holidays. The reviews say this is not for younger children. What's up with those parents? (I was traumatized by The Wizard of Oz. Hated it.)

I love these books and have been a little nervous about the movie - wondering how a book like the Golden Compass - which is so dense and philosophical and about the writing - would translate to the screen - but now I must go see it!
I actually don't think these are children's books and I agree with you about people taking young children to see things like this. It always shocks me. I have to go make a daemon now!
